Diverticular disease
Diverticular disease
Diverticulosis is a condition that occurs when small pouches or sacs form and bulge through weak spots in the wall of the colon. When diverticulosis causes symptoms, such as bleeding, inflammation, or complications, doctors refer to this condition as diverticular disease.

To diagnose diverticular disease, doctors review the patient's medical history, do a physical exam, and order tests. The doctor may notice pouches in the colon wall during tests performed for other reasons. If the patient has no symptoms related to these pouches, the doctor may diagnose diverticulosis.
